Simple Habits That Can Save Senior Eyesight

Age-related vision problems are rather common among seniors. However, some of these problems can lead to permanent vision loss, and that can lead to seniors losing their independence. Fortunately, there are some everyday habits that seniors can learn that will help protect their eyesight.

1. Stop Smoking

If your senior loved one needs yet another reason to stop smoking, maintaining healthy eyesight is it. People who smoke do not get enough oxygen to all of their organs and other body parts, including their eyes, putting unnecessary stress on those body parts.

2. Wear Sunglasses

You may think skin is the only thing that needs protecting when out in the sun, but UV rays can affect the eyes, too. Have your elderly relative wear a pair of protective sunglasses every time he or she goes outside, particularly on warm, sunny days.

3. Go for a Walk

While smoking decreases the amount of oxygen the body gets, cardiovascular exercise increases it. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, seniors who take a daily walk can reduce their chances of developing problems like macular degeneration by up to 70 percent.

4. Get Some Sleep

Sleeping gives eyes a chance to recover from working nonstop all day, and a good night’s sleep is great for keeping the entire body healthy anyway. Ideally, seniors will get eight hours every night. Also, encourage short naps during the afternoons to give senior eyes a rest.

5. Be Careful with Computers

For seniors who enjoy spending time online, a few extra precautions can help protect the eyes. Take a break from looking at the screen every 15 minutes, and make sure the screen is at least 20 inches from the face. Also, minimize glare by adjusting the lighting in the room.

6. Eat a Healthy Diet

A healthy, well-balanced diet full of antioxidants from fruits and vegetables can protect the eyes. Leafy greens, berries, and sweet potatoes are all great options. The eyes also need healthy omega-3 fatty acids to thrive, too, and can be found in tuna, salmon, other fatty fishes, and nuts.
